The Jove Empire

The Directorate | The Third Empire | The Architects of the Capsule

Status: Dissolved / Transferred (c. YC 118) Capital: Unconfirmed (Historic: Jove System) Primary Heritage: Genetically Enhanced Human

Archival Overview

The Jove Empire represents the oldest, most technologically advanced, and most enigmatic of the human civilizations in the New Eden cluster. Historically isolated within the inaccessible Jove regions, they have acted as silent observers, occasional benefactors, and terrifying adversaries to the younger empires. To the common citizen of the Amarr Empire or Gallente Federation, the Jove are near-mythological figures—architects of the Hydrostatic Capsule that birthed the modern capsuleer age.

Despite their technological supremacy, the Jove have been plagued for centuries by the Jovian Disease, a genetic depression that results in the cessation of the will to live, leading to total societal attrition. As of YC 118, following the Caroline's Star event and the transmission of the "Inheritance," the Jovian Directorate is considered effectively defunct. Their assets, stargates, and station administration have largely been ceded to their proxy organization, the Society of Conscious Thought (SoCT).

Origins & The Three Empires

Jovian history is segmented into three distinct eras, each defined by radical shifts in governance and biological philosophy. Unlike the other races who rebuilt slowly after the collapse of the EVE Gate, the Jove retained a significantly higher portion of pre-collapse technology, allowing them to enter a "Golden Age" while others were in the dark ages.

The First and Second Empires

The First Empire lasted approximately 8,000 years—a golden age of expansion and stability. However, stagnation led to the rise of the Second Empire, dominated by the "Tyrants." Under figures such as Miko Bour, the Jove engaged in aggressive genetic modification to curb their erratic emotional impulses. This era birthed the Sleepers (who rejected the Tyrants' modifications and fled to Anoikis) and laid the groundwork for the modern Drifters.

The Shrouded Days & The Third Empire

The collapse of the Second Empire ushered in the "Shrouded Days," a 500-year dark age where the Jove nearly went extinct. They emerged as the Third Empire (the Directorate), having purged the Tyrants but carrying the permanent scar of the Jovian Disease. Their ideology shifted toward Statism—a belief in the suppression of dangerous emotions and the elevation of information and logic to maintain survival. They view the younger races not as peers, but as dangerous children playing with fire—specifically the fire of unchecked expansion and artificial intelligence.

The Directorate Structure

The Third Empire was governed by the Jovian Directorate, a small, opaque council of officials who managed the managed decline of their race. Unlike the feudal Amarr or democratic Gallente, the Directorate operated as a technocratic survival mechanism. Information was their primary currency; they maintained a vast surveillance network across the cluster, often infiltrating other empires to steer development away from existential threats (such as AI research).

With the onset of the Inheritance protocol, the Directorate formally dissolved. Authority was transferred to the Society of Conscious Thought, an organization originally founded by the Jove Ior Labron to mentor non-Jove humanity. Figures such as Veniel acted as the bridge between the dying Directorate and the rising SoCT.

Military Doctrine & Technology

The Jove Navy has rarely been seen, but its few engagements have been decisive. Their doctrine prioritizes extreme technological superiority over numbers. A single Jove vessel is often equivalent to a fleet of standard empire warships.

  • Motherships: The Jove Mothership is a vessel of immense power, capable of utilizing "doomsday" weaponry that predates the Titan-class hulls of the other empires.
  • Phantom & Wraith: Frigate and cruiser-class vessels utilizing advanced cloaking and sensor dampening technology, allowing them to observe or strike with impunity.
  • Weaponry: Jove vessels utilize advanced directed energy weapons (lasers and particle streams) with tracking and range far exceeding contemporary standards.

Perhaps their greatest military contribution was the Hydrostatic Capsule. Gifted to the Caldari State (specifically the Ishukone Corporation) following the Battle of Vak'Atioth, this technology allowed pilots to interface directly with their ships, granting the reaction times necessary to combat larger fleets. This gift fundamentally altered the balance of power in New Eden.

Historical Conflicts

The Battle of Vak'Atioth (YC 23216)

The defining military engagement of the modern era. The Amarr Empire, seeking to expand its Reclaiming, launched an invasion of Jove space. The Jove, attempting to negotiate, were rebuffed. In response, a single Jove Mothership and a small support fleet met the Amarr Golden Fleet at the system of Vak'Atioth.

The result was a massacre. The Jove weaponry penetrated Amarr armor with ease, and the psychological impact of the defeat shattered the image of Amarr invincibility. This defeat directly triggered the Minmatar Rebellion, as the enslaved tribes saw their masters bleed for the first time.

The War of a Million Lies

An internal, shadow conflict fought primarily through information warfare and propaganda. The Society of Conscious Thought, growing in power, attempted to seize control of the Directorate's policy to be more proactive in New Eden. The Directorate suppressed this "soft coup," reaffirming the policy of non-interference, though the SoCT remained a potent tool for influence.

Proxies & The Legacy

With the Directorate's withdrawal, the Jove presence is maintained by proxies:

  • Society of Conscious Thought (SoCT): The primary inheritor. They operate the Gnosis, Sunesis, and Praxis vessels—designs that blend Jove philosophy with capsuleer accessibility. They now hold the Jove seat on the CONCORD Inner Circle.
  • The Drifters (Vigilant Tyrannos): Not allies, but a dark reflection. These entities utilize Jove-derived technology and biology, hailing from the Anoikis wormhole regions. They are aggressively hostile to the Amarr and have targeted Jove observatories, harvesting the bodies of the remaining Jove to sustain their own decaying existence.

The Jovian Disease

The central tragedy of the Jove is the Jovian Disease. Unlike viral pathogens, this is a genetic and psychological disorder resulting from millennia of tampering with the human genome. It manifests as a deep, unshakable depression, followed by the loss of instinctual drives (hunger, self-preservation), and finally death.

Despite their mastery of cloning and molecular biology, a cure was never found. Theories suggest the disease is the result of the Jove "losing their humanity" in the quest for perfection, or a safeguard embedded in their DNA by the Second Empire to prevent further tyranny.
